Work Experience with FODIP
I was naturally apprehensive about beginning my placement with FODIP, particularly because the charity deals with such a contentious issue. Moreover, I felt slightly uneasy blogging about the conflict as I felt that I was not qualified enough to comment on the conflict. However, I was advised to consult different resources, online and in the office, in order to gain a deeper understanding about the narratives that are at play. With this information and with the support and advice of my colleagues, I slowly became more comfortable discussing and writing about the subject. I think the essential thing that I have learnt is that there is no limit to what you can learn about the conflict and people feeling less informed should be encouraged to ask questions and engage more with the current situation. It has been fascinating to gain an appreciation of the subject and to challenge the knowledge that I had previously obtained from the media in Britain. I would really encourage people who were in my position to participate in this dialogue even if the questions they have may seem arbitrary.
I have equally enjoyed my other responsibilities here and feel that the diversity of roles was extremely beneficial as it has made me realise my different strengths and weaknesses. For instance, I have really enjoyed doing project management for the STVP Volunteer Project in Jerusalem. I was given advice on methods, such as putting together a Gantt chart, and this has overall given me the confidence to work in the area of project management. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn not only in the office environment but in Jerusalem. Working in Jerusalem made me reassess my role in the conflict and the most effective ways of promoting positive dialogue. It is this critical engagement which requires the understanding of all perspectives in the conflict and this is an extremely valuable skill to have developed.
Other administrative responsibilities such as drawing up cost estimations and budgets for various projects have also become a part of my role here and have given me a valid insight into how charities function.On reflection, I feel that I have learnt a great deal and will continue to support interfaith dialogue. The only shame is that these six weeks have flown by! I would highly recommend anyone to take up this opportunity with FODIP as it has been a fantastic learning curve and thoroughly enjoyable.
